How do UV ink stamps work?

UV ink creates a discreet impression that is almost invisible in ordinary light and fluoresces under a suitable ultraviolet light. Learn where it works, how to test it and how to choose a clear custom design.

The basic principle

UV-reactive ink absorbs into a suitable surface and fluoresces when illuminated by an appropriate ultraviolet light. The result is discreet identification rather than a normal coloured impression.

Apply the mark

Stamp lightly and evenly on a clean, suitable test area. Avoid rocking the mechanism or applying more ink than the surface can absorb.

Allow it to dry

Drying depends on the material and the amount of ink transferred. Do not handle, stack or rub the item until the test mark has dried.

Reveal and verify

Illuminate the mark with a suitable UV light and confirm that every important line, letter and logo element is easy to recognise.

Choose the impression area

Rectangular wording or a square security mark?

The UV range currently uses six rectangular COLOP C formats and two square Q formats. Choose the smallest impression area that keeps every important element clear.

C10–C20

Small rectangular marks

27 × 10mm or 38 × 14mm for initials, short codes, names and compact identifiers.

C30–C40

Everyday logos and wording

47 × 18mm or 59 × 23mm for compact logos, asset marks and longer wording.

C50–C60

Larger detailed rectangles

69 × 30mm or 76 × 37mm when the design needs more space for detail or recognition.

Q30–Q43

Square logos, seals and badges

30 × 30mm or 42 × 42mm for balanced symbols, seals and square organisation marks.

Before a full rollout

Run one controlled test

Use the actual substrate, the real UV light and the normal checking environment. A white paper test alone cannot prove how the mark will behave on a finished label, pass, certificate or asset surface.

A UV stamp is a verification aid—not a complete security system

Use it as one controlled layer alongside access procedures, records, unique references, numbering or other checks. A UV mark alone does not provide high-security anti-counterfeiting.

Control the light as well as the stamp

Staff need a working, suitable UV light and a known checking procedure. Ambient light, viewing distance, background fluorescence and battery condition can all change how easy the mark is to see.

Is UV stamp ink completely invisible?

No absolute invisibility should be promised. The ink is designed to be almost invisible under normal light, but a faint tint can remain depending on the material, background colour, lighting and amount of ink transferred. Test the exact surface first.

Which surfaces work best with UV stamp ink?

Absorbent white or pale matt paper, card and untreated paper labels are the best starting points. Coloured, fluorescent, coated, glossy and non-porous materials can change normal-light visibility, fluorescence, drying and durability, so test the actual stock.

Do I need a UV torch?

Yes. A suitable ultraviolet light is required to reveal and verify the impression. Test the chosen torch or lamp with the stamp, surface and normal checking environment before relying on the process.

Can I use my own logo, wording or identifier?

Yes. The UV stamp can carry suitable text, a logo, initials, an asset reference or a simple verification mark. Bold shapes, clear spacing and readable lettering normally reveal more reliably than fine detail, gradients or photographic artwork.

Which UV stamp size should I choose?

Choose the smallest impression area that keeps every important line and logo element clear. Rectangular COLOP C formats suit wording and horizontal logos; square Q formats suit badges, seals and balanced symbols.

Is a UV stamp enough for high-security anti-counterfeiting?

No. Treat the UV mark as one verification layer alongside controlled access, records, unique references, numbering or other checks. The checking light and staff procedure are part of the system too.

Can the UV ink pad be replaced or re-inked?

Can a UV security stamp be used on skin?

Do not use it on skin unless the exact ink supplied is expressly approved for skin contact and its directions permit that use. For event admission, suitable tickets, passes or wristbands are the safer default.

How long does UV stamp ink take to dry?

Drying varies with the surface, coating, temperature and amount of ink transferred. Make a test impression, allow it to dry fully, then handle and rub-test it before marking valuable items or starting a full production run.
