Which Stamp Is Best for Glossy Paper?
If you're looking for a stamp to use on glossy paper, it's important to understand that not all stamp inks are designed to work on every surface. The type of material you're stamping has a significant impact on how well the ink performs, and glossy paper presents a unique challenge.
Most self-inking stamps, including every stamp we supply at Stamp Ninja, use high-quality water-based ink. Water-based inks are specifically designed for use on porous materials such as standard office paper, envelopes, cardboard and untreated card. These surfaces absorb the ink quickly, allowing it to dry rapidly and produce the sharp, crisp impressions that self-inking stamps are known for.
Glossy paper is different because it has a coated surface that resists moisture. Instead of being absorbed into the paper, the ink sits on top of the coating. As a result, a water-based stamp impression may remain wet for an extended period, making it prone to smudging, smearing or wiping away completely if touched.
For this reason, we do not recommend using our self-inking stamps on glossy, laminated or coated paper if you need a permanent or fast-drying impression. Although the stamp itself will work perfectly, the water-based ink is simply not formulated for these types of surfaces.
The same advice applies to many other non-porous materials, including plastic, metal, glass, acrylic, glossy labels and certain types of packaging. These materials require specialist solvent-based or industrial inks that are designed to bond to smooth surfaces rather than being absorbed into them.
At Stamp Ninja, we only supply self-inking stamps with water-based inks because they provide the best performance for the vast majority of everyday applications. They produce clean, detailed impressions on standard paper, are reliable in office environments and are suitable for thousands of documents, envelopes, invoices and forms. We do not sell solvent-based stamping systems or specialist inks for non-porous materials.
If you're unsure whether the material you're stamping is suitable, a simple test can often provide the answer. If the surface readily absorbs ink from a normal pen or marker, a water-based stamp will usually perform well. If the surface feels smooth, shiny or coated and ink tends to sit on top before drying, it's unlikely to be suitable for a standard self-inking stamp.
Some customers ask whether leaving the impression to dry for longer will solve the problem. While this may reduce smudging in some cases, it does not change the fact that water-based ink is not intended for glossy surfaces. Even after drying, the impression may still be less durable than it would be on ordinary paper.
If your application involves stamping standard office documents, envelopes, shipping paperwork, filing systems or cardboard packaging, our self-inking stamps are an excellent choice and will produce consistently sharp impressions. However, if your primary requirement is to stamp glossy packaging, laminated cards or other non-porous materials, we believe it's better to be honest than make promises we can't deliver. Our products are not designed for that purpose.
If you're ever unsure whether one of our stamps is suitable for your intended application, please get in touch before ordering. We'll always provide straightforward advice and let you know whether a water-based self-inking stamp is the right solution for the surface you need to stamp.
